Its a phenomenon, a revelation, a lifestyle, an achievement, a landmark, a milestone, a turning point in the Facebook’s existence. Yesterday Facebook hit 500 million users. This social networking site has been on the dot com for just about 6 years. Launched in February 2004 by its current CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it is also close to the revenue of $1 billion. Facebook is second only to Google to get most number of hits.
On this occasion, there are a few facts I would like to share about Facebook:
- Before the major facelift of the Facebook homepage in 2007, the front page logo of the old Facebook page used to feature a man’s face, blurred behind the cloud of binary code. Referred to simply as “that guy”, this man was none other than the legend Al Pacino.
- Many of us know that Facebook started out with the users from Ivy League colleges and other educational universities. But in April 26th Facebook announced that it is open for select corporate as well. Facebook opened registration of companies such as Apple, Amazon, Intel, PWC etc.
- Facebook has over 250 million active users and that, 100 million users log in each day.
- Facebook is the largest photo sharing application in the world. There are about 10 billion private photos.
- Facebook privacy claims every right to sell the private photos. That's how one such private photo ended up in a newspaper article about the Sex Industry.
- California has the maximum penetration in Facebook with over 15 million users from a single state.
- Over 3 billion minutes are spent/wasted on Facebook each day.
- AOL may have helped people connect online in the early days of internet, but AOL, even in its hey day, was 1/15th the size of what Facebook is today.
- Psychologists have introduced a new kind of disorder called Facebook Addiction Disorder, shrunk to be called as FAD.
- If Facebook were a nation, it would be the 3rd most populous country beating China and India.

I was an Orkut fan until couple of years ago. Since few of my friends also had a profile on Facebook, I thought I might as well register. Initially, I found it a bit difficult to get used to Facebook. Unlike Orkut, it had applications and status messages, besides Wall Post which was similar to Scrapbook. But as the time passed, the familiarity grew along with my loyalty towards it. Now it has come to a situation where I login to Orkut barely once in a month and give Facebook about 15 to 20 hits in a day.
Facebook has outgrown to be synonymous with “Online Sharing”. Every article in any website, every post in a blog, every headlines in an online Newspaper carries the ‘f’ link to allow its sharing to this social networking site. It has now forayed into the mobile market and is aggressively bent on conquering this segment too. It has created quite an uproar already. Many of the mobile social networking applications now come with support for Facebook, turning it into a so called “Facebook Platform”.
Well, Congratulations! I am influenced by the FAD that is Facebook.
