My brother and I recently visited Ramohalli, which is about 30 kilometers from my place of residence. Ramohalli is famous for its Banyan Tree.
This tree is said to be 400 to 500 years old. It is a decent-but-not-so-impressive kind of spot to unwind, far away from city’s hustle and bustle. If nothing, at least the drive around the country side road is soothing but for the innumerous speed breakers across the stretch which might get a little annoying.
After the world’s biggest banyan tree at Thimmamma Marimanu near Gooty in Andhra Pradesh, the banyan tree at Botanical Gardens of Kolkata and Adyar tree at Chennai, this is the fourth largest banyan tree in India. As is typical to this species, the main tree has over the years spread out widely with several aerial roots. It is quite hard to believe that it is a single tree though.
While we were returning after spending a peaceful time at the Big Banyan Tree, it was very depressing to see this:
I wonder when these people will actually realize the worth of a tree. It is documented that one mature tree produces 260 pounds of oxygen per year and is enough to support 2 human beings.
While the Big Banyan Tree has been doing more than its share for centuries, this tree however had to die prematurely. Thanks to the human beings which it intended to support.
